At least one investigator wanted to charge Zimmerman with manslaughter but was overruled, according to the documents, which are shedding new light on a case that has raised questions about racial profiling and “stand your ground” laws. The investigator, who was on the scene after the shooting, wrote on March 13 that the confrontation should have been avoided. That report came nearly a month before Zimmerman was arrested.

The documents, photos and video were turned over by prosecutors to defense attorneys earlier this week before they were released to the media. Included in the many witness interviews were accounts by an acquaintance of Zimmerman’s who said he’s racist and a co-worker who said Zimmerman bullied him and mocked him with an exaggerated Middle Eastern accent.

The autopsy says medical examiners found THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, when they tested Martin’s blood and urine. A police report shows the 17-year-old had been shot once in the chest and had been pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy says the fatal shot was fired from no more than 18 inches away.

Also in the package is a photo showing Zimmerman with a bloody nose on the night of the fight. A paramedic report says Zimmerman had a 1-inch laceration on his head and forehead abrasion.

“Bleeding tenderness to his nose, and a small laceration to the back of his head. All injuries have minor bleeding,” paramedic Michael Brandy wrote about Zimmerman’s injuries in the report.

Whether Zimmerman was injured in the Feb. 26 altercation with Martin has been a key question. The 28-year-old Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because the unarmed teenager attacked him.

Zimmerman was not arrested for weeks because he invoked the Florida’s law that does not require a person to retreat in the face of a serious threat. He was released on bail and is in hiding while he awaits trial on a second-degree murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty.

The investigator who called for Zimmerman’s arrest, Christopher Serino, told prosecutors in March that the fight could have been avoided if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement. He said Zimmerman, after leaving his vehicle, could have identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and talked to him instead of confronting him.

He said there is no evidence Martin was involved in any criminal activity.

The lawyer for Martin’s parents seized on the investigator’s recommendation.

“The police concluded that none of this would have happened if George Zimmerman hadn’t gotten out of his car,” said attorney Ben Crump. “If George Zimmerman hadn’t gotten out of his car, they say it was completely avoidable. That is the headline.”

A separate report written by Serino at the crime scene says Martin had $40.15, Skittles candy, a red lighter, headphones and a photo pin in his pocket. A single 9mm shell casing was found near Martin’s body.

New witness accounts also emerged Thursday. A witness, whose name is redacted, told investigators he saw “a black male, wearing a dark colored hoodie,” on top of a white or Hispanic male who was yelling for help.

The witness, who was looking out the sliding glass door at his home about 30 feet away, said he saw the black male throwing punches “MMA (mixed martial arts) style.”

He said he told the fighters he was calling the police. He said that as he was making the call, he heard a shot. He looked outside and saw the person who had been on top laid out on the grass as if he had been shot. He said the other fighter was standing on the sidewalk, talking to another person with a flashlight.

The case has become a national racial flashpoint because the Martin family and supporters contend Zimmerman singled Martin out because he was black.

Two acquaintances paint an unflattering picture of Zimmerman in police interviews.

A distraught woman tells an investigator that she stays away from Zimmerman because he’s racist and because of things he’s done to her in the past, but she didn’t elaborate on what happened between them.

“I don’t at all know who this kid was or anything else. But I know George, and I know that he does not like black people. He would start something. He’s very confrontational. It’s in his blood. We’ll just say that,” the unidentified woman says in an audio recording.

A man whose name was deleted from the audio told investigators that he worked with Zimmerman in 2008 for a few months. It wasn’t clear which company it was.

The man, who described his heritage as “Middle Eastern,” said that when he first started many employees didn’t like him. Zimmerman seized on this, the employee said, and bullied him.

Zimmerman wanted to “get in” with the clique at work so he exaggerated a Middle Eastern accent when talking about the employee, the man said. The employee told investigators that Zimmerman made reference to terrorists and bombings when talking about him.

“It was so immature,” said the employee, who ended up writing a letter to management about Zimmerman.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – T-Mobile USA, the fourth largest U.S. mobile provider, said it is cutting another 900 jobs.

The cuts will come on top of the roughly 1,900 it announced earlier this year.

The unit of Deutsche Telekom is looking to preserve cash for investment in its network after its proposed $39 billion purchase by AT&T Inc failed late last year due to regulatory opposition.

T-Mobile USA, which is spending $4 billion to upgrade its network, said in March that it would close seven call centers, cutting about 5 percent of its roughly 36,000-strong workforce.

It had indicated at the time that it could cut more jobs at a future date.

The seven centers employed about 3,300 people. The company said at the time that it would offer transfers to employees of the shuttered call centers, as it planned to add 1,400 jobs at its remaining 17 centers.

Beloved children’s author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, author of the classic boyhood adventure tale “Where the Wild Things Are,” died on Tuesday (May at the age of 83.

The New York Times reported that Sendak’s death was a result of complication from a recent stroke.

Controversial, irascible and not entirely convinced that he was a children’s author, Sendak wrote literate, dark and moody picture books that explored the anxieties and fears of children, and their parents.

Best known for 1963′s “Wild Things,” Sendak also wrote and illustrated the equally groundbreaking “In the Night Kitchen” (1970) and 1981′s “Outside Over There,” which completed a trilogy started with “Wild Things.”

The self-taught author couldn’t be bothered with the traditions of children’s books, in which the Times noted, “young heroes and heroines were typically well scrubbed and even better behaved; nothing really bad ever happened for very long; and everything was tied up at the end in a neat, moralistic bow.”

Instead, his subjects were often rude, selfish, obstinate and occasionally annoying and sometimes they ran away from home, or were kidnapped or, worst of all, their parents disappeared. Sendak’s illustrations looked like sepia-toned pages from a a 19th-century etching, sprinkled with sly wordplay and references that his youngest readers were unlikely to understand.

Though not prolific, Sendak’s work was highly influential. In addition to the abovementioned books, he also created 1960′s “The Sign on Rosie’s Door,” the 1962 boxed set collection of four tiny booklets called “The Nutshell Library” and 1967′s “Higglety Pigglety Pop!” His first writing and illustration effort in 30 years, 2011′s “Bumble-Ardy,” told the story of an orphaned pig who throws a wild birthday party for himself.

In addition to his writing, Sendak also designed theater sets and illustrated dozens of other works, including ones by such legendary authors as Hans Christian Andersen and Herman Melville to William Blake and Leo Tolstoy.

But amid all the accolades for his work, it was the story of “Wild Things” hero Max that captured the hearts and minds of generations of readers. The irritable boy who likes to wear a wolf costume and sets sail for unforeseen adventures after being sent to his room without dinner was adapted by director Spike Jonze
 into a moody feature film
 in 2009. He was also the subject of a documentary, “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak,” by Lance Bangs, which was released by late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch’s
 Oscilloscope Laboratories.

His books were not always a hit with some critics, who complained about the horrifying monsters in “Wild Things” and the nudity of the young hero of “Night Kitchen,” which subjected the book to censorship. But Sendak was undeterred, arguing that life is full of horrors and that children are not immune to the reality of death, loneliness and confusion.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 10, 1928, Maurice Bernard Sendak was the son of Polish Jewish immigrant parents. The deaths of much of his extended family in the Holocaust imbued him with a sense of mortality early in life, which could explain the often bleak, danger-filled nature of many of his books and the peril of the children he wrote about. He was also a sickly child, which resulted in many days and weeks in bed that allowed his fertile imagination to bloom.

He began his professional career as an illustrator working on window displays for F.A.O. Schwarz and segued into illustrating other author’s children’s books in the 1950s before venturing off to write his own books. A solitary man by nature, Sendak lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his companion of 50 years, psychiatrist Eugene Glynn, who died in 2007, as well as his dogs and his beloved Mozart records.

Sendak appeared on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” earlier this year and shared his wit and wisdom about children’s books with the host.

“There is something in this country that is so opposed to understanding the complexity of children,” he said of the controversy kicked up by some of works. “I don’t write for children. I write … and somebody says, ‘That’s for children.’ I didn’t set out to make children happy or make life better for them or easier for them.”

Nate Diaz’s next opponent is set. After his dominating win over Jim Miller on Saturday night, MMA Junkie reports that Diaz will get the next shot at the UFC lightweight belt.

Though previous reports had Diaz possibly facing off with Anthony Pettis for a title eliminator, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Diaz will get the next title shot after champion Benson Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar rematch this summer.

In his last three fights, Diaz has a second-round submission over Miller, a decision over Donald Cerrone and a first-round submission win over Takanori Gomi. With an overall record of 16-7, five of his losses have come in the UFC but he has never been stopped in the Octagon. Diaz was last submitted by Hermes Franca at a WEC bout in October of 2006.

A 1-0 win over United saw City return to the top of the table on goal difference, and maximum points from their remaining games at Newcastle and at home to QPR will almost certainly seal the club’s first title since 1968.

However as Manchester City’s fans and players celebrated after a raucous title decider at Eastlands hyped as the biggest match in Premier League history, Mancini’s eyes remained firmly on the prize.

“It is not finished,” Mancini warned his players after Vincent Kompany’s header clinched a famous win. “If we think it is finished, we will be making a big mistake.”

“It is important that we are on the top now but it is more important to be there after May 13.”

If City win their final two games, Manchester United would only be able to overhaul their bitter rivals by racking up big victories over Swansea and Sunderland. City’s goal difference now stands at plus eight.

Monday’s triumph capped a remarkable turnaround in the championship race, which appeared to be done and dusted as recently on April 8 when United went eight points clear after City’s defeat at Arsenal.

But a disastrous run of results from United which has seen them take only four points from a possible 12 following one win, two defeats and a draw means the destiny of the title is now back in City’s hands.

Mancini warned his players that United’s stumble illustrated how quickly fortunes can change as they steeled themselves for their final two tests.

“Football is crazy,” Mancini said. “It is important to always believe in yourself when you have a bad moment.

“We were on the top for 28 games and I think we deserve another chance.

“But in two games, anything can happen.

“It is enough for my players that they remember six weeks ago and we were four points ahead of United. In two games we lost everything. Up to now, we have done nothing.”

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had earlier been embroiled in a spectacular touchline bust-up with Mancini which saw the two managers need to be separated by the fourth official and staff from both clubs.

The pair clashed after Ferguson took exception to a rough challenge on Danny Welbeck by City hardman Nigel De Jong. Welbeck later hobbled away from Eastlands with his leg in a protective boot.

“He was out on that touchline the whole game haranguing the referee, the fourth official and the linesmen,” Ferguson said of Mancini.

“The minute I come off the bench for a bad tackle by De Jong on Welbeck, he was out again. He can’t have it both ways.

“He’s been complaining about referees this season but he won’t be complaining tonight that’s for sure.”

Ferguson had no complaints with Monday’s defeat however and said his side were paying the price for blowing leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in their 4-4 draw with Everton at Old Trafford on April 22.

“You can look back at all sorts of games but you’ve got to look at the Everton one,” he said.

“That was a ridiculous performance for the last seven minutes to lose two goals. That’s maybe cost us the league.”

United legend Gary Neville said Ferguson was now faced with the “worst nightmare” of losing the title on goal differenece.

“I know — I’ve been in that changing room for 20 years — it’s his worst nightmare,” Neville told Sky Television.

“Losing a championship on goal difference is what he always talks about, every single season.

“In January, in February, in March, whatever month it is going for a championship, he will say if you’re 1-0, 2-0 up, ‘score three, score four’.

“You never know whether it’s going to get to goal difference.

“It is his worst nightmare.”
